AMERICANISM
COMMITTEE
The Americanism Committee produces and
submits the Detachment’s Americanism
Scrapbook each year in accordance with the
National Bylaws and Administrative
procedures.  
The Americanism Award is to the
Detachment what the Marine of the Year is
to the individual member.  Our Detachment
was awarded the National Americanism
Award, the Gil Grey Award, in 2010, in
only our second year of competition.
BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE
The Bereavement Committee nsures that all
deceased Marines in the local area receive a
proper visitation by Detachment members in
order to render final respects for our fallen
comrade.  
BIRTHDAY BALL
COMMITTEE
The Birthday Ball Committee Corps,
10 November 1775.  
COLOR GUARD COMMITTEE
Under the guidance of the Detachment Sergeant at
Arms, The Color Guard Committee provides a
professional color guard detail for use at all
Detachment functions and also provides details for
color guards, memorial services, rifle details, and
other services as requested.  The proper care and
maintenance of the Detachment’s compliment of M-
1 rifles is also be the responsibility of the color
guard committee.
COMMUNICATIONS
COMMITTEE
The Communications Committee
will effectively disseminate
information on Detachment
events and activities to all
Detachment members using all
means available in order to
achieve its mission, including
phone, email, text messaging, and
web-based tools.
FLAG DAY COMMITTEE
The Flag Day Committee ensures that Flag
Day, a National Holiday each 14 June, is
properly commemorated through an
appropriate public service, either
independently or in conjunction with other
local veterans and service organizations,
public officials, and community members.
GREEN STATE VETERANS
HOME COMMITTEE
The Green State Veterans Home Committee
maintains communication with the William F.
Green State Veterans Home in Bay Minette,
Alabama in regards to any needs and concerns
at the Home that the Detachment may be able
to address, specifically with regards to any
Marines in residence at the facility, and report
the same to the Detachment on a regular basis.  
The committee is also coordinates with the
Home in order to facilitate the Detachment’s
annual trip on 10 November to commemorate
the Marine Corps Birthday and any other visits
as necessary.
HISTORICAL
COMMITTEE
The Historical assembles and
maintains a record of the P.L. Wilson
Detachment’s history and
achievements, including, but not
limited to, awards, member
recognition, and community
involvement.
HOMES FOR OUR TROOPS
COMMITTEE
The Homes For Our Troops Committee acts as
liaison between the Detachment and Homes for Our
Troops (HFOT), both locally and nationally, and
reports any communication to the Detachment on a
regular and timely basis.  The committee is also be
responsible for reporting any HFOT activities that
occur in the local area and requests for support
from the Detachment to the membership.
HOSPITALITY
COMMITTEE
The Hospitality Committee takes
such actions necessary to ensure a
welcoming environment at
Detachment events, including but
not limited to, the regular
meetings of the Detachments.  
The committee duties include, but
are not limited to securing
refreshments prior to each regular
meeting via volunteers, sponsors,
or committee purchase.  The
committee should be composed of
an adequate number of members
to welcome new members and
guests at each meeting and to
provide the same with all means
necessary to feel welcome.
INSTALLATION OF
OFFICERS COMMITTEE
The Installation of Officers Committee
produces the Detachment’s annual
Installation of Officers and Awards
Banquet to be held in January.  The
committee provides for a suitable Installing
Officer, dinner, ceremony, and invited
guests.
LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE
The Legislative Cstudies all legislation of
benefit to Veterans at the local, state, and
national level and makes recommendations to be
submitted to the membership concerning the
advisability of endorsing support or urging
rejection of pending legislation concerning
Veterans’ affairs.  The committee, with the
chair deemed the Detachment Legislative
Officer, studies and develops resolutions as
necessary with regards to legislation beneficial
to the protection of the Nation, the United
States Marine Corps, and Veterans at the local,
state, and national level and submits the same
as approved by the Detachment membership.
MONUMENT
COMMITTEE
The Monument Committee is
responsible for the maintenance of all
monuments created by or under the
care of the Detachment and reports
the same to the Detachment on no
less than quarterly basis.  The
committee is also be charged with
undertaking any new monument
projects or updating, improving, or
renovating any existing ones under
the care of the Detachment.
MULHERIN HOME COMMITTEE
The Mulherin Home Committee maintains
communication with the Mulherin Home in Mobile,
Alabama in regards to any needs and concerns at the
Home that the Detachment may be able to address
and reports the same to the Detachment on a regular
basis.  The committee also coordinates with the
Home in order to facilitate any visits approved by
the membership as well as purchasing or soliciting
donations as necessary in order to conduct the
visits.
NEWSLETTER
COMMITTEE
The Newsletter Committee is
responsible for the editing and
printing of the Detachment
regular monthly publication, The
Emblem, and taking the steps
necessary to publish and mail the
newsletter no later than the week
prior to the regular monthly
meeting.  The committee is also
responsible for soliciting any
advertising for the publication
and, with the consent of the
Board of Directors, shall set
advertising rates.  The committee
also maintains the mailing list for
the newsletter to include the
National elected officers, the
NVC Southeast Division, the
Department of Alabama
Commandant, and the
Commandant of each Detachment
within the Department of
Alabama.  Each year, the
committee shall submit the
newsletter for consideration in the
National Newsletter Competition.
PICNIC COMMITTEE
The Picnic Committee is responsible for
producing the Detachment’s annual family
picnic in May of each year, normally on the
weekend of Armed Services Day.  The
committee is under the guidance of the
Detachment Junior Vice Commandant as a
membership function.  The committee is
responsible for the location, composition,
and activities of the day, including food,
beverages, events, and awards.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
COMMITTEE
The Public Relations Committee,with the
committee chair deemed the Detachment Public
Relations Officer, serves as the Public Relations
and Press Officer of the Detachment and
utilizes all means necessary to properly
transmit the activities of the Detachment within
the community, including press releases,
interviews, Facebook accounts, and other
means available to promote the Detachment.
RECRUITING
&
RETENTION
COMMITTEE
The Recruiting and Retentions
Committee, under the guidance of the
Junior Vice Commandant, maintains
and monitors the membership levels
of the Detachment.  The committee is
responsible for maintaining the
current membership roster and
reporting on new members and
retention levels during the regular
monthly meetings.  The committee
also monitors delinquent members on
the Detachment roster in order to
keep such members to a minimum
with the advice and support of the
Board of Directors and the general
membership.
SEMPER FI GOLF
TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE
The Semper Fi Golf Tournament Committee
formulates and implements the Detachment’s
Annual Semper Fi Golf Tournament in order to
maximize awareness of the League and the
Detachment in the community and raise funds for
the charity selected by the committee.
SERVICE OFFICER
COMMITTEE
The Service Officer Committee
should become acquainted with
Federal and local laws and with
their interpretation and
application within the framework
of service to veterans.  The
committee chair is the
Detachment Service Officer and,
with the support of the
committee, shall assist Marine
veterans, and all military veterans
upon request, and their
dependents, widows or
widowers, in securing benefits
provided by laws and regulations
and be in charge of all Veterans
Administration activities of the
Detachment.  The committee
regularly reports on issues and
topics of importance to Marine
veterans, their families, widows,
widowers, and dependents, as
well as the veteran’s community
in general.
ROADBLOCK COMMITTEE
The Roadblock Committee is responsible
for the coordination of the Detachment’s
Roadblock Fundraisers, with no less than
four roadblocks being held each year.  The
committee is responsible for selecting
locations, securing any permits necessary,
and coordinating with other Marine
organizations, such as 3rd Force
Reconnaissance, in order to ensure a
successful fundraising and promotion for
the League and the Detachment.
P.L. WILSON DETACHMENT
SEMPER FI RIDERS
The P.L. Wilson Detachment Semper Fi Riders
bring together both Regular and Associate
members of the Detachment who desire to
come together for camaraderie and fellowship in
the motorcycle community.  The Riders
conduct events in order to promote the
Detachment in the community, secure new
members, and foster camaraderie within the
Riders and the Detachment.  The Riders do not
exist as a separate motorcycle group or club.
SHIPS STORE
COMMITTEE
Under the guidance of the
Detachment Paymaster, The Ships
Store Committee is responsible for
the operation of the Detachment
Ships Store, including the purchase of
Marine Corps League uniforms and
supplies and such other merchandise
as deemed appropriate for sale to
Detachment members.
STRATEGIC PLANNING
COMMITTEE
The Strategic Planning Committee should assess the
current status of the Detachment with regards to
both the local and national environment, create three
(3) and five (5) year goals for Detachment programs
and growth, and develop actionable plans in order
to achieve the desired goals.  
TOYS FOR TOTS
COMMITTEE
The Toys For Tots Committee
coordinates the Detachment’s
Toys for Tots program with that
of the local Marine Reserve unit
under the guidelines of the
National Toys for Tots
Foundation in order to provide an
effective supporting arm for the
program in the Mobile
community.  The committee also
oversees the Detachment’s Coke
Rewards/Toys for Tots program
in order to maximize the number
of ‘points’ donated to the Toys
for Tots Program, so long as the
Rewards program exists.
TRAILER COMMITTEE
The Trailer Committee is responsible for
the care and maintenance of the Detachment
trailer as well as securing a safe and secure
location for its storage.  The committee is
also responsible for providing drivers
capable of towing the trailer for Detachment
events such as parades, picnics, and
roadblocks.
VETERANS
ADMINISTRATION
VOLUNTEER SERVICE (VAVS)
COMMITTEE
The Veterans Administration Volunteer Service
Committee consists of one Representative
appointed by the Detachment Commandant
and Deputies as deemed necessary by the
Commandant and Board of Directors.  The
committee maintains close contact with the
Biloxi VA facility and the Mobile VA Clinic in
order to communicate any needs and concerns
that the Detachment may be able to address,
specifically with regards to any Marines in
need, and report the same to the Detachment on
a regular basis.  The committee coordinates
with the VA in order to facilitate any visits
deemed necessary by the committee and
approved by the membership and should
compile a comprehensive VAVS program
report for submission to National for
Detachment recognition.
VETERANS HELPING
VETERANS DEEP SEA
FISHING RODEO
(VHVDSFR)
COMMITTEE
The VHVDSFR committee is
comprised of the Committee Chair,
Two Vice-Chairs, and Sub-Chairs as
necessary for the proper function of
the Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.  The
committee is also be responsible for
conducting the Veterans Helping
Veterans Kids Wishin’ To Go Fishin’
fishing rodeo in conjunction with the
VHVDSFR.
WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE
The Ways and Means Committee prepares and
presents a financial program and budget for the
conduct of affairs and normal business of the
Detachment for the upcoming year and makes
recommendations regarding way and means of
increasing the funds of the Detachment.
WEB SERGEANT
COMMITTEE
The Web Sergeant Committee is
charged with the creation and
upkeep of the Detachment’s
website in order to provide
proper and timely information to
Detachment members and the
public.  The committee, under the
direction of the Detachment Web
Sergeant, is also responsible for
updating information on the
Detachment’s page on the
National website.
