In the spirit of 'Once a Marine Always a Marine", Marine, Desert Storm Veteran, and Marine Corps League Member Robert Carlock has embarked an incredible journey.
Marine Carlock has been challenged by his wife, friends, and colleagues to run in not just ONE but THREE marathons [for a total of over 78 miles!!]. All 3 marathons will take place in the state of Alabama over the period of THREE months. The marathons are the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville in December, the Firstlight Marathon in Mobile in January and the Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham in February.
This Marine is running in support of Wounded Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Without a doubt, this effort is a tremendous challenge and one that requires a great amount of training, dedication and intestinal fortitude. A fair amount of pain from fatigue, injuries and general soreness also comes with distance running. In addition, training for three marathons back-to-back demands a fair amount of time. Training often has to be done early in the morning before work and late in the evening after work. At times, the training causes him to sacrifice other commitments. When discussing taking on this endeavor with his wife, she made it evidently clear that all the aforementioned issues were ones that he has the luxury of choosing to accept, whereas the warriors he supports often do not have the choice to face the obstacles they encounter. It is part of their daily life. Robert's goal is to raise funds, and awareness, so their lives can be better than they are now. Although Robert is the one doing the actual running, he is not alone on his "Team" during this challenge. The staff of Phoenix Fitness, his coach Larry Wayne, and the fellow runners from Cammie's Old Dutch are just a few who join Robert in his mission to raise funds and awareness.
