Mr. Walters
enlisted in the Marine Corps
Reserve in 1991 while attending
Yale University. He was a
member of the 3rd Force
Reconnaissance Unit in Mobile,
AL until 1996.
Mr. Walters has been a
member of P.L. Wilson Detachment
since 1995 and has previously served as Judge
Advocateand Junior Vice Commandant. |

Tom Claxton
Mr. Claxton
enlisted in the Marine
Corps in 1956 and served in
Honest John Rocket
Battalion at Camp Lejeune
through 1959. He has
served as Service Officer
and Junior Vice Commandant before
taking his current post with P.L.
Wilson Detachment.

Junior Vice
Commandant
Larry Kent
Larry was born in Mobile, AL, and
joined the Corps in 1968. He served with 2/4 in
Viet Nam in 1969 and returned home in1970. He
married his wife Gloria the same year. Larry
worked with the Mobile Fire Department for
twenty-four years, before moving on to work with
the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama. He
now is the head of the Tillman’s Corner Chamber
and Community Center. Larry joined the
Detachment in 2007 and has previously served as
Judge Advocate. Has also served as Chair of the
Homed for Our Troops committee, as well as on
the Fishing Rodeo Committee.

Judge Advocate
Gwyn Howard
Gwyn joined the
Corps 17 June 1964. He served for six years - 3
years active, 3 years reserve. After training at
Parris Island, Gwyn went to Camp Lejeune, NC as
an 1141 Electrician. He was transferred to Camp
Pendleton, CA to Alfa 1/1 where he trained for
Vietnam. He served in Vietnam one year, one
month, and ten days. On 1 June 66, Gwyn earned
the rank Sgt (E-5). He was Honorably discharged
on 9 March 1970. After leaving the Corps, he
worked for South Central Bell for eight years,
Noble Drilling Corp. for 23 years, and worked in
Nigeria, Africa for three years until
‘retirement’ in 1999. He is presently working
at Hiller Systems, Inc. He joined the P.L.
Wilson Detachment in August 2008 and currently
serves as the chair of the Semper Fi Riders.

Adjutant
Gerald
Steele
Mr. Steele served on active duty from 1978 to
1990 and in the reserves from 1992 to 2005,
retiring as a Colonel. While active duty Mr.
Steele served in several squadrons as a B/N in
the A-6 Intruder. His reserve duty included
tours with the 3rd Force Reconnaisance Company
in Mobile, AL as will as the 4th MAW in New
Orleans, LA as an Intelligence Officer. Mr.
Steele is currently the Practice Administrator
of an Orthopaedic Group of doctors in Mobile,
AL. |

Paymaster
David Sprott
After completing two years of
Junior College in CA and therefore eligible for
the Naval Aviation Cadet Program, Dave joined
the Navy in September 1953 and reported to
Pensacola for training in January 1954. Since
age six, Dave wanted to fly off (and back onto)
carriers, but soon realized the Marine Corps was
more squared away with more Espirit de Corps, so
he applied for the Corps and was selected. In
June 1955, he became a 2ndLt with new Wings of
Gold and a new bride and spent the next 19 years
flying fighters and transports. The next 30 some
years were spent flying corporate aviation in
the Mobile and Pascagoula areas. His beloved
wife of almost 53 years passed away in May 2008,
and Dave has one son and grandson in Texas, and
one daughter and grand- daughter in Virginia.
Dave joined the Detachment in 2007 and has
served as Paymaster since 2008.

Rev. Thurmond Rolad
Rev. Roland
served in the Marine Corps
for 8 years and received an
honorable discharge in
1978 after 8 years, 23 days,
6 hours, and 30 seconds of
service. After training at
Parris Island Rev. Roland
went to Camp Lejeune, NC as
an 0311. After his military
career Rev. Roland
worked for St Vincent
Hospital in Birmingham,
AL for 10 years, as a
trucker for 10 years.
Rev. Roland has been an
ordained minister since
1978. Rev. Roland was
the detachment Marine of the Year
for 2006 in recognition of his
extraordinary year of caring
service to the detachment.

Charlie Malone
Charlie Malone joined the Marine
Corps in January of 1954 and was immediately
sent to Paris Island, S.C. for Boot Camp. From
Paris Island, Charlie attended ITR at Camp
Pendleton and caught the June draft to Korea
where he joined the 11th Marines 1st
Division. Upon completing a tour of Duty in
Korea, Charlie returned to Camp Pendleton where
he was made a Section Chief on a 105 Howitzer.
Upon his release from active duty, Charlie
joined an Active Reserve Amtrak Unit in Mobile,
Al. in 1958. This unit was later changed to 3rd
Force Reconnaissance and in 1963 received his
“Jump Wings”. Charlie left the Reserves in
1964 and later joined the Marine Corps League in
May of 2001.
