DETACHMENT’S 2ND ANNUAL KIDS FISHING RODEO JULY 2010

The P. L. Wilson Detachment's 2nd Annual Veterans Helping Veterans Kid's Wishin to Go Fishing  Rodeo" was held last Saturday, 10 July. The event allowed over 30 local children of deployed and local veterans to enjoy a morning of fishing.  The Detachment with the assistance of Doug Houston Outdoors had originally scheduled this event as a deep sea excursion in coordination with the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo; however, due to the oil spill, and with the ingenuity of member Tom Claxton, this year's rodeo was held on a local lake as a freshwater tournament. The participants, age 8 to 12, were provided a police escorted bus trip to the lake and had burgers and fries for lunch. In addition to all the fish the kids caught, each child received a rod & reel, tackle box, tackle, goodie bag, ice chest, t-shirt, bait and much more. By all accounts, from both the children and the adults, the Rodeo was a great success and many thanks must be given to the sponsors and the volunteers.

DETACHMENTS EFFORTS PUT THE 'REMEMBER' BACK INTO MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY 2010

Mobile's 2010 Memorial Day Ceremony was a day to remember as members of your Detachment were ever-present throughout the service at the National Cemetery on Virginia Street in Mobile. The Detachment Color Guard, under the direction of Jim Smith, reverently performed the flag raising and lowering ceremony as well as providing the rifle detail for the three-round volley salute to our fallen comrades. Detachment member Dr. Sid "Just a PFC" Phillips was the guest speaker and gave a tremendous oration on his time in the Marines and what Memorial Day means to all who have served. He was also quite the celebrity, having achieved the spotlight through his participation in "The War" and HBO's "The Pacific". Rounding out the "Red Coat Regiment" was our very own Detachment Chaplain John Reid who served as Chaplain for the event. Numerous members of the Detachment were on hand to remember the day, which is reserved for the remembrance of those who have given their lives in the service of their country.
